Challenge
A manufacturer and distributor of engines and power systems was managing its own transportation after the third-party logistics (3PL) provider that had been performing this service went bankrupt. The manufacturer used a broker for truckload (TL) shipments and made arrangements with several carriers to handle less-than-truckload (LTL) shipments. Shipments were generally ad hoc and fast paced. Many TL shipments required lead times of less than 24 hours, some fewer than five hours, from notification to pickup. The manufacturer’s in-house transportation management team lacked the requisite expertise to produce the desired results.
